Looking for a companion to your Greek New Testament? Something to help your exegesis? I’d like to strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of Douglas S. Huffman’s The Handy Guide to New Testament Greek. Huffman is a professor at Biola University and has done an excellent job of providing pastors and students of the Greek New Testament with a truly “handy” resource. I highly recommend it for three reasons: (1) substance and (2) size.
The substance of Huffman’s book is top notch. It covers grammar, syntax, and diagramming. Since I’ve been out of seminary for a number of years now, “keeping my Greek” has been a labor of love. It’s quite easy to forget some of the basic rules of Greek grammar as well as why it matters when in the middle of exegesis. Thus, The Handy Guide does a wonderful job of including everything that one needs for a quick refresher.
The size is also extremely attractive. While I’m thankful for many of the electronic tools available on my laptop or iPad (Logos & BibleWorks), there are many times I find myself sitting with my Greek New Testament. This little book (112 small pages) is the perfect companion. The size says, “Bring me along.”
The substance and size makes this one of the most useful resources for studying the Greek New Testament that I’ve come across in quite some time. It covers all of the bases but doesn’t do it in such an exhaustive way that the main ideas are drowned out.
If you have any Greek background, I’d recommend that you pick up a copy immediately!
