” Contrary to popular opinion, refraining from sexual activity is not psychologically harmful. Sexual energy can be strong, but its expression is not essential for maintaining physical or emotional health.” (David G. Benner and Peter C. Hill, Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology & Counseling, 2nd ed., 32)

Our society would really do well to understand this quote. Abstinence does not harm our minds, nor is sex essential for our physical or emotional health. Of course, this is referring specifically to sex outside of marriage.

Matt Chandler recently reminded us that our culture has basically jumped entirely into the sexual revolution and we are still not happy. Sex is happening more often with more people and people are still unhappy.

Sex isn’t the key to happiness. Jesus is.
