Do Trajectories Toward the New Creation Speak to Sexual Addiction?

by Luke Geraty | Mar 20, 2014 | Posts

As a pastor, I’ve interacted with numerous people who have struggled with the desire to have a lot of sex with as many people as possible. Generally speaking, this struggle has come from men, but I’m sure there are women who have this desire. At any rate,...

Rarely is cancel culture about choosing what is good and right.

It is primarily about wielding power.

When we do not know history, we imagine it’s inevitability, instead of its wild uncertainty.

In celebration of black history month , I have bee In celebration of black history month , I have been releasing podcasts featuring some of my favorite people, exploring a wide range of subjects! There are video & audio versions!

▶️LINK IN BIO▶️

It started out with @mayotron talking with me about his new book, “Reclaiming Diversity” (which is AMAZING) and why celebration the contributions of black people is important. Ramon is amazing and his book on the history of the church is a really important publication. I’m going to actually do a #TheoVlog on it soon. You need it!

I then had @awuorek2 on to discuss Africa, worship, & Sacramental Theology. Edgar is a friend who lives in beautiful Kenya and one of the craziest motorcycle drivers I’ve ever driven with, ha ha! I’ve spent time with him in his country and I can’t wait to go back!

The next episode I did with @thestephsnow122 and we talked about ethnic reconciliation and her life calling of pursuing justice in every area of her life. She’s a lawyer and daily involved in pursuing justice... plus she has one of the coolest cats in the world (Thurry).

My next convo w/ Donnell was an exploration of liberation theology and critical race theory. I love Donnell’s thinking, determination, and overall commitment to seeking the freedom of all!

And this morning I dropped the latest discussion that I had with @thethirdman_music about the importance of lamenting in our theology of worship. Reese’s son was murdered a couple of years ago (which I learned about ON the podcast) and his son’s killer walked away free, which caused him to become even more committed to pursuing justice.

All I can say is that I have really enjoyed learning from these people, each created in the image of God, filled with the Spirit of God, and gifted in unique and important ways.

Tomorrow morning I’m recording an episode w/ @mayotron and @awuorek2 together, so I think that’ll be the last BHM contribution, but most certainly not the last black voice on the podcast!

I arrived on Monday for a quick four day visit to see my parents, sisters, & cousins and will be heading home soon. Bummed not to be with my wife and kids but grateful to be with my dad and mom.

My family made it special and we ate some really great Korean food and my favorite — ice cream cake!
Cyril successfully survived #football this year. B Cyril successfully survived #football this year. Bummed they didn’t get to play as many games as we hoped, but I’m really proud of him for doing his best and keeping a positive attitude. The coaches did all they could to make this season happen, despite the challenges everyone’s facing and I think I speak for all parents when I say that we’re grateful they did their best too.

I should add that it was really hard to enjoy that 🌞 today too. 70 degrees in February is tough work.

I sat down with @gpackiam to discuss how a sacramental charismatic reality has helped sustain that church and much more, so check out the link in my bio.

Glenn’s work is an excellent starting point for those interested in taking this journey and also a really helpful thinker in relation to navigating the crisis that many Christian leaders have a sense that western churches of the evangelical persuasion find themselves in.

Thanks, Glenn!
Dawn and I just spent a few days with our good fri Dawn and I just spent a few days with our good friends, Mike & Betty Frye. The Frye’s are Vineyard legends, having ministered with John Wimber many times all over the world and planting several Vineyard churches... and they STILL love Jesus and people, despite the challenges!

Dawn and I wanna be like them when we grow up. Since we have five kids and they have five kids, we are apparently on our way, haha!

We feel so refreshed, renewed, and recharged! And talking about all the amazing things God has done over the years makes me excited to see all of the amazing things God will do in the future!

Now back to the ‘bluff to see what God’s got planned.

Party people, what up! Party people, what up!
Waves of grief have been washing over me these pas Waves of grief have been washing over me these past few days… months… year? Never in my life have I felt such a roller coaster ride of emotion. As the regular routines of life take place, the overwhelming despair seeks to creep up and take over…

… and the waves continue.

Last night a good friend of ours text Dawn and I to ask how we were doing. We both responded, though not knowing each other’s responses, with the words, “exhausted.” What other word fits? We are not without hope. We are not without faith and trust in Jesus. We are not without love for God’s kingdom. But we are exhausted. Dawn further remarked, “Our lives are so sad right now.” After a year of watching so much negativity, we now share the sorrow and grief of watching our loved ones suffer. Dawn’s grandmother, though having lived a full life, is coming to the end of this life and beginning of eternity with God. My dad is battling cancer, with days that are good and days that are bad and we live with so many unknowns.

… but we seek after peace.

I marvel at how often the Daily Office Scripture readings, found in my Book of Common Prayer, seem to know just what is needed. The Psalms have consistently provided a perfect explanation of my own soul’s state while also reminding me that my hope is not in the things of this world, but in the eternal, good and beautiful God. How can the psalmist know my every thought and emotion? The Reformer Martin Luther stated that “in the Psalms we look into the heart of every saint.” John Calvin suggested that within the Psalms, “we look into a mirror and see our own heart.’ It’s as if each day’s reading has my name and address on it, knowing what my daily struggles or questions are, though not always providing the immediate “fix” that we humans long for, but an eternal solution wrapped up in the love of God…

… and yet suffering continues.

John Wimber continues to fascinate my theological John Wimber continues to fascinate my theological imagination as well as my interest in “doing the stuff” in the local church. Few modern leaders have taught me, challenged me, and frustrated me like Wimber!

On Wednesdays I often release YouTube videos about John (check my bio for a link to them) but today I wanted to just let you know that this biography is REALLY good. And actually, it’s not really a biography so much as it is as a Festschrift, a collection of essays that honor Wimber by sharing about his impact, both positive and sometimes critical.

What makes this book unique, I think, is that it’s written by Brits and essentially focused on Wimber’s impact in England. J.I. Packer said that other than John Wesley, no one has had more impact in England in the past three hundred years that John Wimber.

I should mention that I am so grateful to my dear friend Dr. Steve Burnhope for finding this book for me and sending it across the pond. My collection of Wimber things continues to grow and this book of essays is certainly among the more enjoyable that I’ve read. I’ll likely do a video review sooner than later!
